Kijani Living Supports Earth Day All Year Round

Earth day is celebrated on the 22nd of April and began in 1970, so as to celebrate the planet and encourage us to be more environmentally friendly. It all started since a devastating oil spill in the United States and it is now celebrated in over 193 countries. Around the world, organisations and individuals undertake activities such as raising awareness about recycling, planting trees, volunteering for green projects and aiming to reduce the overall consumption of energy consumed.

At Kijani Living, we make the conscious decision to work with brands that are like minded and environmentally pro –active. Below are some examples of the Superfood brands we work with.

Nutiva

Nutiva makes sure to source organic products and obtain fair trade certification. They are involved in funding tree planting at schools in their local community and constantly seek other ways to better protect our environment and ensure a better quality of life for the communities they serve as well as their employees and customers. We have listed just a few of their projects and achievements.

Partnering with Natural Habitats, Nutiva ensures that no deforestation or habitat destruction results from the growing or harvesting process. The Red Palm used for their Palm Oil is grown on small organic family farms in Ecuador and is certified Organic, Fair Trade, RSPO and Non –GMO. The Fair Trade premiums are used to help the farming communities with projects such as supporting local schools or building health clinics. Moreover Nutiva supports PalmDoneRight, which is an international campaign to raise consumer awareness about palm grown for good.

The Nutiva Foundation was created to advance ecologically beneficial agriculture and healthy communities. Nutiva gives away 1% of their sales to the foundation and other groups since 1999.

Nutiva strives to maintain a zero waste headquarters and warehouse. In 2015, they were able to divert 95 % of waste materials from their landfill, to either be reused (33%) or recycled (62%). As a result, the recycled materials included 208 MT of byproduct and kitchen scraps that were composted, donated to farmers for animal feed or used for biofuel. Nutiva earned the Gold Standard Zero Waste certification while their zero waste program generated $174 k in revenue.

Amazing Grass is yet another brand we are fond of! Their products are Organic, Non GMO, Plant Based and they ethically source their ingredients besides the ones they grow on their family farm in Kansas. Amazing Grass also supports the Whole Planet Foundation, an organisation dedicated to making a difference in local communities around the world.

Organic Traditions are committed to supporting farmers who are dedicated to the principles of sustainable agriculture. They also support farming communities and ecosystems through fair trade initiatives as much as possible. For instance, their Certified Organic Baobab is wild harvested and sustainable. The fruit is directly harvested from co-operatives of rural women in South Africa providing a sustainable income and stable livelihood.
