Hyssop is a distinctive plant that has been used for centuries within herbal traditions. Hyssop, a beautiful flowering plant native to southern Europe and Asia, is currently grown all over the world. Its violet-blue flowers blossom in the summer months often attracting honeybees. Highly aromatic, the flora has a pleasant minty fragrance.
A member of the mint and sage family (Lamiaceae), true hyssop has the botanical name Hyssopus Officinalis which comes from Greek origins. It can be found as one of the main herbs in the famous French liqueur Bénédictine.
The natural constituents of hyssop include flavonoids, volatile oils, bitters, tannins, monoterpenes (including pinocamphone) and sequiterpenes. Research has looked into the antioxidant activity of the flavonoids found within hyssop.
It has been documented that as early as the 12th century, the well-known Benedictine nun and master herbalist, Hildegard of Bingen, describes Hyssop as a powerful and purifying herb. At the time of the Middle Ages, it was often strewn on floors to mask unpleasant smells.
