'Burnout' might be a commonly known term today, particularly in relation to physical and mental exhaustion at the end of the year, but it was first invented in 1974 by German-American psychologist, Herbert Freudenberger, who coined the term for those suffering from 'a state of exhaustion caused by prolonged overwork.'  In 2018, research showed that 595,000 people in the UK suffered from some form of workplace related stress and burnout.

However, whilst burnout was originally just attributed to work related fatigue, as we end 2021, another pandemic driven year, the condition has new meaning: from shifts in working environment, homeschooling and childcare concerns, job instability and isolation all causing extreme physical and mental exhaustion.

End of year burnout is fatigue that manifests itself towards the end of the year. Physical symptoms associated with burnout are disrupted sleep, aches, headaches, nausea and low libido. It often happens when someone feels in conflict with themselves, or as if they lack control. Leading neurophysiologist, Neera Bhikha, believes that there is a strong connection between stress and feeling burnt out, “Stress can be characterised by over-engagement, and when you are burnt out you don’t want to engage. A stressful situation produces urgency and hyper-activity whereas burnout is the end point – where one is left feeling helpless and without hope.”

Tools you can integrate into your daily routine to help manage stress, fatigue and anxiety, include meditation, daily walks in nature, getting good sleep and exercising more.
