We sat down with Jill Anenberg Lawrence, Holistic Health Coach also one of our Ener-C Ambassadors to ask her what the best foods are to eat for natural energy - and here's what she said:

The number one culprit draining our energy? Sugar! Now I love me some sweets, but I stay away from the refined bad boys that lure you in and keep you coming back with their addictive ways. What’s the opposite of energy? Being hopped up on S (that’s the street name) and suffering from the side effects like mood swings, depression, superficial highs and energy crashes. No wonder our co-workers pass on having lunch with us!

We all know the best way to get over someone is to get on to someone else. Your new sweetheart, uh… sweet tooth packs a much longer list of impressive attributes: fiber, antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, minerals. We’re talking superfoods—nutritionally dense edibles that pack an incredible punch in a little package. Fruits like green apples, grapefruit, kiwi, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and pears are lower on the glycemic index, meaning less sugar to spike your blood glucose. Shout it proud: “I’m in love with fruit!” See? You already forgot about that white refined street hustler.

Bees kick ass! Raw honey is a perfect sugar substitute. It’s anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-pretty much everything. Plus, it’s packed with B vitamins (directly linked to energy) and too many minerals to list. Bee pollen and royal jelly can be taken by the teaspoon or mixed in with your protein shake. It’s like a magic fist bump from the bee to up your energy in minutes!

Another superfood I add in smoothies and trail mix is goji berries. Fun fact: they’re a complete protein. They’ve got energy boosting B1, B2, and B6 vitamins and antioxidants E and C. With their high vitamin A content, these little berries massively improve our vision, immune system, sexual function, and libido. Pass me the gojis! Am I right? ;)

Now I want you to eat more… drumroll, please… CHOCOLATE! But not any ol’ chocolate—rich, dark, raw cacao! Once you go black, you never go back! Cacao is one of the highest antioxidant foods. Theobromine gives you that energy boost without any jittery side effects. An added bonus is the bliss chemical anandamide. All that energy with a sweet and loving disposition to boot!

What are low in calories, high in fiber, iron, vitamins and make your skin glow? Greens and veggies like kale, spinach, collard greens, swiss chard, all dark lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, beets, alfalfa sprouts, red bell pepper, asparagus, cucumber, radish, mushrooms...no deprivation here.

The ‘90s are over...we want our fat back, please! In addition to helping with glowing skin, quicker brains, better moods and stronger immune systems, healthy fats are pure energy! I may only have a few pairs of shoes, but my fat collection is drool worthy! Avocados, a large variety of nuts/seeds, superseeds (hemp, chia, flax, pumpkin), coconut oil/butter and chips, wild salmon and olives. Appetizers never tasted so healthy.
